Lieutenant Scheisskopf

Lieutenant Scheisskopf is a fictional character in Joseph Heller's novel Catch-22.

Scheisskopf's military rank changes throughout the book. He is obsessed with holding elaborate parades. He was the training commander for Yossarian and Clevinger. He goes from "Colonel Scheisskopf" to "General Scheisskopf" in what seems to be a matter of days. When he achieves the rank of Colonel, he has a conversation with General Peckem where Peckem tells Scheisskopf that although he cannot hold parades anymore, he can continually send out memos that "postpone" the parade until the next week. The next week the parade is always postponed again.

"Scheisskopf" literally translates from the German language as "Shit Head", a title by which characters in the book occasionally refer to him.
