Lieutenant-Governors of Manitoba
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a historical list of the Lieutenant-Governors of Manitoba in Canada. The earlier lieutenant-governors also had jurisdiction outside of Manitoba, in the adjacent territories. From 1870 to 1876 they were titled Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba and the North-West Territories, and from 1876 to 1905 Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba and Keewatin District. After 1874 the officer's duties within Manitoba were mainly ceremonial, because the province had responsible government and a premier, but was actually the head of government of the North-West Territories and Keewatin District.

(*) On April 9, 1872, Francis Godschall Johnson was appointed as Lieutenant-Governor, replacing Archibald. His commission was revoked before he was sworn in, however, and Archibald was retained in the position for a few months longer. Johnson was usually included in nineteenth-century lists of Manitoba's lieutenant-governors, but was dropped from the ranks in the early twentieth-century.
