Libertad (Spanish word for "freedom") is the tentative title of Velvet Revolver's upcoming sophomore album. The album is to be more of a concept album along the lines of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street, according to frontman Scott Weiland, who first announced the album in December 2005. In March 2006, bassist Duff McKagan commented: "The first record was really just us coming together and being straight in the studio, but now it's gonna be deeper and bigger and all that. Concept record? I don't know, but it's gonna be killer." [1] Around the same time, RCA Records announced that the album has not yet been recorded, and there is no set release date. It is rumored that the album will be released this fall.[2]

On March 7th, 2006, the band's website posted the following notice: "Velvet Revolver is currently writing new music for their next record. Stay tuned for more information." On March 10th, McKagan revealed that the band is scheduled to enter the studio and begin recording on April 10th. [3]

In an April 18th article at RollingStone.com, the album was referred to (probably mistakenly) as Libertide. Matt Sorum commented: "The first one was definitely a rocking, punky, bashing record. We really want to make a deeper album this time. ... The other record was more of a collaboration -- now we want to see what everyone brings to the table on their own. It's cool when people come in with an idea without the usual collaborators, 'cause it can totally spark." In the same article, Weiland revealed that the band had written about fifty songs so far, and that they are in the process of choosing twenty to record, from which they will select sixteen for the album. [4]

In a blog entry on June 19th, Sorum wrote, "[We] have been hard at work on the new VR stuff. We have been working 5 days a week for the last month, and have about 10 songs worked up. Going to work in my studio for another couple of weeks, then start rehearsing for our mini tour of the west coast. Then [we will be] back in the studio to complete the album." [5]

In a brief interview with MTV News, Slash said, "We're in preproduction and it sounds amazing. ... I'm just really excited 'cause hopefully we'll get this thing out before the year's over. The material is amazing and ... we've grown so much as a band."[6]

As Sorum wrote in the aforementioned blog entry, Velvet Revolver embarked on a brief tour in California and Las Vegas late July and August 2006, during which it was rumored that they would play some new songs from Libertad. However, no new songs appeared in their set except for Roadhouse Blues, which the band played in concert for the first time. The band is currently in and out of the studio, but it is unknown how far along they are with the album. However, it is unlikely that they will meet the late 2006 release date originally stated, and so the album is more likely to come out in early 2007. The rumored 2007 release seems strangely appropriate since it would mark the 20 year anniversary of the release of Appetite for Destruction, the magnum opus of Guns N' Roses, the band McKagan, Slash, and Sorum were previously members of.

In Kerrang! magazine on 16th December, the magazine had a small article regarding the new album. Scott Weiland has said the new album is due out in in late spring, also citing some troubles with the making of the album "We were really excited about six months ado, when we first began writing. Then we really kind of flat-lined for a while, We didn't know which way we were going. Once Brendan (O'Brien) came on board, it was kind of like a shot in the arm. It was a new energy."

[edit] Track listing

Confirmed:

  • "Wasted Heart" - While talking to Rolling Stone, Duff McKagan said recently that "A song [on the upcoming album] called 'Wasted Heart' is great. Kind of a back-to-Exile on Main Street-type of song."
  • "Queen For a Day", confirmed by Scott Weiland
  • "The Last Fight", a Beatlesesque ballad confirmed also by Scott Weiland
  • "Pills,Demons, Etc.",confirmed by Scott Weiland
  • "Just 16", confirmed by Scott Weiland
  • "Get Out The Door", confirmed by Scott Weiland
  • "The Last Fight", confirmed by Matt Sorum

Rumoured:

  • "Come On, Come In" - This song was featured on the Fantastic Four soundtrack, and may be included on Libertad because it was recorded after the release of Contraband.
  • "The House is Alive" - This song was believed to appear on the soundtrack for Monster House, to be released in July 2006, but the song was conspicuously absent. Matt Sorum commented to a fan through MySpace that the song was left off of the soundtrack because the producers of the film (Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis) thought it was too heavy and didn't fit the tone of the film. There is a chance that the song could make it to Libertad, but this is considered very unlikely. Sorum also said the song will not be released on any other soundtracks because the band wants to focus on new material for Libertad right now.

[edit] Personnel

  • In September 2006, Matt Sorum confirmed via Camp Freddy Radio on Indie 103.1 that the band had recently signed a deal with Rick Rubin to produce the album. However, Rick left to produce U2 after hearing the songs the band had written, and only liked 3-4 of them. They were told to go away and jam some more and hopefully they'll have more quality material by the time he returns from sessions for the U2 album.

[edit] Singles

It is expected that the first single from Libertad will be released in early 2007.
