Liberalisterne

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liberalisterne (The Liberals) is a Danish political party founded in 2005 to campaign for a more liberal (in the classical, free-market sense of the word) societal order in Denmark. Among its chief wishes are the instution of a flat tax, opposition to recent anti-terror laws, and a general cut in public spending.

The party aims its appeal mainly at voters disappointed by the policy direction of the current centre-right coalition of Venstre, a nominally liberal party, and Det Konservative Folkeparti ("The Conservative People's Party"), which they claim has since its election in 2001 largely carried on the policies of its Social-democratic predecessor.

Liberalisterne are currently stuck in a limbo, as the Ministry of the Interior stalled the official approval of the new party and its name. The application was made in the autumn 2005, but as of April 2006 the Ministry had still not processed it. Given that the current Minister of the Interior, Mr Lars Løkke Rasmussen is a member of Venstre, there is a strong suspicion among supporters of the new party of both abuse of power and conflict of interest. Because of this, the case has been transferred to the Ministry of Justice (since the Minister of Justice, Lene Espersen is not a member of Venstre but of the Conservative People's Party).
