Li'l Jinx
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Li'l Jinx was a comic strip published by Archie Comics since the late 1940s, featuring the antics of a high-spirited little girl and her neighborhood friends.
According to Don Markstein's Toonopedia, Jinx was the daughter of Hap and Merry Holliday, earning her unusual name by virtue of being born during Halloween. Making her first appearance in Pep Comics # 62 (July, 1947), Jinx was probably patterned after similar characters such as Marge's Little Lulu or Jimmy Hatlo's Little Iodine, both popular features of the time.
Firmly entrenched in post-war domestic comedy, the strip was successful enough to land Jinx her own title from 1956 to 1957, but was then relegated to the back pages of various Archie Andrews titles until the early-1980s. During her peak period, Jinx's stories ranged from three-panel blackout gags to seven page "fillers". Jinx was normally depicted as a lovable but rather mischievous little girl engaged in a comical battle of wills with her long-suffering father. Like most of Archie Comics' strips of the period, Jinx was well scripted and genuinely funny, offering clever insights into family relationships and children's perceptions of the adult world.
Many of Jinx's friends include Charley Hawse (sometimes called Fat Charley); Greg, Russ; Roz; Gigi and Mort the Worry Wart.
According to most sources, creator Joe Edwards based Jinx's adventures on his own experiences as a parent, a factor which doubtlessly contributed to the character's unusual longevity. Besides having appeared in two of her own series (Li'l Jinx, 1956-1957; Li'l Jinx Giant Laugh-Out, 1971-73) Li'l Jinx has also appeared in numerous Archie Andrews titles, including the double-sized Little Archie comic book.
Currently, Li'l Jinx makes regular appearances in 5-6 panel strips that are printed in Archie Comics' Digests and Double Digests.
