[edit] History
In the 1971 the Mifflin County School District merged the four high schools in the county into one. (Lewistown-Granville, Rothrock, Chief Logan, and Kishacoquillas) Since the school district did not have a building large enough to accommodate the combined student population, a new one needed to be built. This building is now the present day Lewistown Area High School. The building was slated to be a state-of-the-art school for the time period; equipped with a large auditorium and balcony, a television studio. However, the residents were strongly against the merger of the schools, preferring to not have the schools merge at all. In 1976, the locals got their wish and Penn Highlands broke up as the Chief Logan, (who had been hosting half of the Penn Highlands students until completion of the new school) and Kishacoquillas High Schools were restored following the '75-'76 school year. Since the Penn Highlands building was almost completed, instead of letting the massive school go to waste, the school district had no choice but to combine Lewistown-Granville High and nearby McVeytown's Rothrock High into one school and move those students into the renamed present day high school.

[edit] Athletics
Lewistown's athletic teams are called the Panthers and their colors are blue and white. The school's original colors were maroon and silver, but were changed after the break-up of Penn Highlands High School, as the new incarnation of Lewistown High inherited the blue and white sports and band uniforms of the defunct Penn Highlands school.
Lewistown Area High School sponsors the following sports:
- Boys: Cross Country, Football, Soccer, Golf, Basketball, Baseball, Wrestling, Tennis, Track & Field
- Girls: Cross Country, Soccer, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Tennis, Golf, Track & Field
Lewistown athletic program is most recognized by its basketball teams. Both the boys' and girls' programs are dominant in PIAA's District 6 AAA level. The girls basketball team is particularly well known as the Lady Panthers have won two state championships in 1997 and 1998, a state finalist in 2004, while posting a 305-52 record over the past 12 seasons. The Lewistown girls' basketball team has not experienced a losing season since 1986. While the boys have not been quite as successful as their lady counterparts, they still have a respected program in their own right. A state runner-up trophy in 1997 highlighted a season that saw both Lewistown basketball teams reach the championship game. Both teams are often ranked among the Top 10 teams in the state by The Patriot-News' PIAA polls.
In 2002 Lewistown won the PIAA Class AA baseball championship, its first in that sport.
