Lewisham station is a railway and Docklands Light Railway station in Lewisham in south east London.
The mainline station serves the North Kent and Mid-Kent lines. The Docklands Light Railway platforms arrived here in 1999 after a southward extension from Island Gardens.
[edit] Station layout
The station layout at Lewisham is a complicated one. There are four platforms for Southeastern train services: 1 and 2 on the North Kent Line; and 3 and 4 serving the Mid-Kent Railway tracks. The former, and original part of the station, opened on 30 July 1849; the Mid-Kent route made it a junction from 1 January 1857. In 1929 large scale remodelling of the junction was undertaken to enable cross-London freight traffic to be routed via Nunhead & Loughborough Junction. The new route utilised part of the erstwhile Greenwich Park branch and included a flyover. Some trains heading for London use the flyover and then descend via Tanners Hill Junction to rejoin the main line, using a reversible line to do so. The Mid-Kent trains from London, having passed through the station, curve round under the main line to Hither Green en route to Ladywell.
Platforms 5 and 6 are served by Docklands Light Railway trains to Bank Station and Stratford station
[edit] Services
Trains from Lewisham go to London Bridge, Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria, and to Hayes, Dartford, Orpington and the Medway Towns. Lewisham is also the southern terminus of the DLR, the previous station being Elverson Road. Lewisham is on the boundary of Travelcard Zone 2 and Zone 3 and is part of a major transport hub, with many buses from the surrounding areas either passing through or terminating here.
