Lewis is a surname. It has more than one possible origin. One is the anglicised version of the personal forename Louis that has, through patronymics, also come to be used as a surname. The other is derived from the Germanic given name Lewis, meaning "renowned, famous battle", and is of English/Welsh origin. Another similar Welsh origin for this name may be a contraction of "Lew's issue" after a fifth century Welsh king.
