Levenshulme

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Levenshulme is an urban area in Manchester, United Kingdom, on the borders of Reddish, Longsight, Gorton, Burnage and Stockport. It is situated on the main Stockport Road (A6) and has a station on the Manchester to London railway line which is served by local commuter trains. Levenshulme is locally known as 'Levy' (pronounced Le-vee).

Levenshulme has an Irish population of nearly 7% which is twice the Manchester average[1], and as a consequence it is sometimes called 'County Levenshulme'. Irish produce, such as Soda bread and Red Lemonade, can be bought in Levenshulme's shops, whilst local cafes serve up boiled bacon and cabbage. The demographics of the district are changing, however, with increasing numbers of (mostly Muslim) people of South Asian origin and a growing amount of Africans, settling in Levenshulme. Over a third of the population belong to an ethnic minority[1].

[edit] History

Levenshulme was an independent authority until the early 20th century, when it was merged into the expanded Manchester.

The district of East Levenshulme used to be known as Talleyrand, and it was said the French Statesman Talleyrand once stayed there during his exile from France, presumably during 1792-1794 [citation needed].

The name is supposed to mean "Town on the Watermeadows" [citation needed]. Hulme (similar to the German Heim) is a common element in local placenames, meaning Village or Settlement.

The typical older housing of Levenshulme consists of terraced houses with wide back entries. This is supposed to be because of an old bylaw of the Levenshulme local authority that every terraced house had to have access by a horse and cart to the back door, so that rubbish could be removed without taking it through the house [citation needed].

[edit] Culture

Levenshulme is evolving into an area typical of South Manchester, i.e. a mix of pubs, bars, restaurants, takeaways, cybercafés and terraced housing. In fact, Levy's cyberculture is rapidly growing and demonstrates that the area is embracing a 21st century lifestyle in a thriving mixed-culture environment. Most noticeably, the crime rate is currently dropping, with the participation of the local community [2].

The community radio station ALL FM is based in Levenshulme.
