"Letterbomb" is the 10th track on Green Day's American Idiot album. It is 4 minutes and 6 seconds in duration. It is in the key of E, a common key signature for punk rock songs, but more relevantly it is one of only two songs (the other is Whatshername) on the entire album not with a key signature of G, A-flat, or A (which are each only a semitone apart). This radically different key signature subconsciously makes the listener aware that this song marks a transition, both in the album's tone and the continually unfolding story of Jesus of Suburbia.
[edit] Story Line
After getting close with Whatsername, there is an eventual breakup. The beginning "Nobody likes you, everyone left you, they're all out without you, having fun," is Watsername taunting Jesus Of Suburbia, and writing him a goodbye letter. This motif later shows up in the end of the medley of "Homecoming." She explains that Jesus Of Suburbia doesn't care enough, and that he isn't who he thinks he is. "You're not the Jesus of Suburbia. The St. Jimmy is a figment of, your father's rage and your mother's love, made me the Idiot America"...she's explaining that Jesus Of Suburbia has turned into what he's always hated and she leaves him. "Well she said I can't take this place, I'm leaving you behind. She said I can't take this town I'm leaving you tonight..." The song attempts to stir up feelings and break the general sense of apathy in American youth.
Billie Joe Armstrong has stated that this is his favorite song on American Idiot.
