Let Me Hear a Lullaby (Japanese: 子守唄を聞かせて - Komoriuta o kikasete) is the fifth episode of the anime series D.Gray-man.
[edit] Plot
After Allen discovers that Lala is the doll, she panics and immediately throws a pillar at him. The exorcist stops her attack and calms her down. Allen learns the truth of Guzol and Lala's past. Long ago, Guzol was abandoned due to his deformity and met Lala, who asked him if he would like her to sing for him. He accepted and ever since that day, they have been together. Lala requests that Allen let her live until Guzol dies. Before Allen can respond, Kanda wakes up and immediately refuses. He argues that they have no idea when the Akuma will come back, that sacrifices are expected to be made in war, and reminds Allen that it is their mission to get the Innocence. The other exorcist, however, stops him from taking the doll's heart and counters that countless sacrifices in war are meaningless. Infuriated, Kanda punches Allen, demands why he wants to be a sacrifice to these strangers and asks if Allen has any something important. Allen admits that he lost that important thing a long time ago and that he just wants to defend the things in front of him. Pierrot interrupts the conversation and captures the Mateel residents. The Akuma critically wounds Guzol and steals the Innocence from Lala.
Allen is furious, and his weapon changes shape as a result of his anger. He easily destroys the sand skin of the Akuma with his new anti-Akuma weapon form. Unfortunately, he experiences a rebound and his weapon transform back to normal. Pierrot sees an opportunity and lunges at Allen. Kanda stops the attack and yells at Allen, claiming that he cannot stand people who do not keep their promise more than naive people. Much to Kanda's annoyance, Allen claims that he is not tired but is taking a break. He reactivates his left arm and together, he and Kanda defeat the Akuma. Allen puts the Innocence back into Lala, but she is no longer the same doll. She asks the dying Guzol if he wants to hear a song. In his dying words, he confesses that he loves her and dies. Noticing that he is "asleep," Lala decides to sing him a lullably. During this time, Allen waits outside patiently for the song to stop. Kanda, who returns from the hospital despite the fact that he should be there for five months due to his injuries, notices that Allen is having a hard time with this and suggests that he should turn off the doll. Allen refuses, saying that it is Guzol and Lala's wish that the former would be the one who turns her off. Kanda scoffs at Allen's naivette and reminds him that exorcists are destroyers not saviors. Before Allen can respond, the singing suddenly stops - three days after Guzol's death. When Allen walks up to Lala to check on her, the doll thanks Allen for letting her keep her promise, indicating that she regains her memories. Lala then breaks and falls into Allen's arms. As Allen mourns over their deaths, he tells Kanda he wants to be an exorcist who can save others.
