Let Airplanes Circle Overhead is an experimental/post rock band from Carlisle in the North West of England. Their name is taken from W.H. Auden's Funeral Blues.

After disbanding previous outfit As An Enemy; Luke Roberts (guitar) and fellow member David Langfield (drums) joined forces in 2003 with James Johnson (guitar/bass) to form Let Airplanes Circle Overhead. Best known for their use of melodic timbre fed on a bed of white noise, the band regularly use a variety of instrumentation to create anthemic, soaring soundscapes. The band receive many comparisons to other post rock bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion and Scottish outfit Mogwai, their music similarly using quiet harmonisation and often elements of jazz improvisation, exploding into fireballs of feedback. The Constellation comparisons are also strengthened by their occasional collaborations with violinists Cathy Jones 2004 and Rachael Dixon (present).

Although having already produced several demos and their debut self titled album; the band continue to crudely record, practice and create from within the walls of The Shed. According to www.motivesounds.com The Shed recordings total over 30 hours of improvisations, captured on primitive recording equipment, and occasionally selections of these sessions are distributed on very limited and highly prized 3" CDRs. The band have recently returned from touring Scotland and the North of England after signing to the local Indie label, Motive Sounds Recordings.
