[edit] Album history

1994 saw the release of Khanoda’s second album, Lessons Learned On Leithgow St., “Lessons” marked a vast departure from the factory stamped dance image the singer initiated on his first album, 1988’s Khanoda, and is one of his most ambitious efforts both lyrically and musically. Feedback-drenched guitars and bass driven rhythms, inspired by shoegazing bands of the early 1990’s like Lush and My Bloody Valentine, along with the use of the Bombarde and binou as well as several other instruments commonly used in Celtic music, Khanoda, along with producer Larry Murray, using nothing but an 8-Track recorder and DAT machine, created a sound sonically structured for the alternative genre. Lyrically, Khanoda dealt with controversial topics such as rape, abortion and homosexuality with fearless wit and veracity.

Khanoda and Murray recorded over 20 songs during the two week recording sessions for “Lessons Learned on Leithgow, St.” however, since many of the songs were written around the same themes, the album’s track listing was narrowed down to six of the strongest cuts that represented one theme each. Despite the album containing accessible melodies, Khanoda's ominous lyrics were considered "too confrontational" for radio. In the wake of its release, "Lessons Learned On Leithgow St." fell upon deaf ears for the most part, selling a humbling 5,000 copies.

[edit] Album facts

  • Although a trio of alternative influenced pop singles were released between 1989 – 1991, which won Khanoda approval amongst the college radio crowd, the songs “Say A Prayer”, “Something To Shout About”, and “That’s My Desire” were not included on “Lessons Learned On Leithgow St.”
  • Leithgow Street is situated off Philadelphia’s once trendy South Street area where Khanoda lived in the early 1990’s while writing and recording the “Lessons” album.
