Less eligibility

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Less eligibility was a condition of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834. This Act of Parliament created workhouses in England and Wales. The less eligibility principle was to make workhouses a deterrent - it stated that working conditions in the workhouse had to be worse than the worst job possible outside of the workhouse. This principle existed to deter people from claiming poor relief. The principle also extended to the food served inside of the workhouse.
