Lesley Hinds, born in Dundee, is the current (2006) Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Scotland.
A teacher by profession, she was first elected to Edinburgh District Council to represent the Telford ward in 1984, later becoming leader of the district council.
In 1996 she was elected to represent the Muirhouse and Drylaw ward in the new City of Edinburgh unitary authority.
She was elected the Lord Provost of Edinburgh on May 8, 2003, succeeding Eric Milligan.
She is also currently Chair of NHS Health Scotland, Scotland's health improvement agency. NHS Health Scotland is currently under the relocation review which will most likely see it being moved from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Lesley Hinds appears to support this which is surprising since she is meant to represent the interests of Edinburgh in her Lord Provost role. When this policy was released it was expected she would of resigned in protest from Chair of NHS Health Scotland but instead has continued working in both jobs. Many consider the Lord Provost job to be a full-time occupation.
Some more of her main positions are Director and Chair of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Ltd and Director and Chair of the Edinburgh Festival Society.
She is considering standing to become an MSP at the next Scottish Parliament elections in May 2007.
She is married with three children
