Leptocephalus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A leptocephalus is the flat and transparent larva of the eel and other members of the Superorder Elopomorpha, including the conger, tarpon and bonefish. This transparency is due in part to its surprising lack of red blood cells.
The leptocephalus of the common Japanese conger, Conger myriaster, is called Noresore in Kochi Prefecture, Japan, and often served live to the table, and eaten live after dipping in Tosazu mixed vinegar. It is a spring seasonal specialty.
It is also the genus name of Leptocephalus, a congrid eel of the Red Sea and Indian Ocean.
