Leopold Karpeles (1838–1909) was a flagbearer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Born in Hungary, his family moved to Texas when Leopold was young. When war broke out and Texas seceded, he moved away, feeling no association with the Confederate States of America.
Karpeles was awarded the Medal of Honor for rallying retreating troops, inducing them to check the enemy's advance while under heavy fire on May 6, 1864, during the Battle of the Wilderness.
