Leon Cort (born September 11, 1979 in Southwark) is a professional footballer currently playing for Crystal Palace. He is a defender who wears the number 6 shirt.
Leon joined Palace in June 2006 from Hull City, following his former manager Peter Taylor to the south London club, which he lives within ten miles of. The transfer fee was £1,250,000 - Hull City's largest ever transfer fee, and their first ever to exceed a million pounds. He had joined Hull City in June 2004 on a free transfer from Southend United.
Cort is a tall central defender noted for his heading ability, not only in defence, but also as a real goalscoring threat from free-kicks and corners. He was an integral part of the Hull City team that achieved promotion to the Championship in the 2004-05 season, even pushing 29-goal winger Stuart Elliott close in the voting for Player Of The Year. He was also almost ever-present in the Hull City side in the 2005-06 season and, remarkably for a defender, in two years at the club he did not receive a single yellow card. He will hope to continue this run at Palace in the current season. Another remarkable feat, achieved while at Southend, was a run of 130 consecutive League appearances - missing zero games through injury or suspension.
Leon is the younger brother of Carl Cort (currently at Wolverhampton Wanderers). In a 2006 game between their two sides, Leon scored for Hull and Carl scored for Wolves.
He has attracted comparisons from Crystal Palace fans to Eric Young due to their physical likenesses and playing style.
