Lemon tetra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lemon Tetra is a type of Tropical Fish which originates from South America. It is a medium size Tetra growing to about 4 cm in length. This is an old favourite, being introduced to the aquarium in 1932. Famous for it's colours, the Lemon Tetra is an almost transparent fish, with a beautiful clear yellow sheen covering the fish's body. Lemons feature a bright red "eyebrow." The dorsal and apidose fin are also covered with streaks of yellow. Males have a larger and more pronounced black band on their adipose fin.

These tetras, like many others are best kept in a shoal of 6 or 7. They swim in the middle and lower water layers.

Although best kept in soft, slightly acid water, the hardiness of this Tetra means that it can easily adapt to harder water. Very hard water, alkalinity 8.0 or higher, will stress and kill lemon tetras

Best in subdued lighting, with a dark background and substrate, remember to feed these pretty tetra's with plant matter as well as the usual flake and dried food, to give them a more varied diet.

An extremely hardy fish, Lemon Tetra's are highly suited to the beginner, because they have no special requirements, and require the same sort of maintenance and care as other hardy tetras such as the Neon Tetra and Glowlight tetra.

They are best kept at a temperature between 73 and 77 degrees fahrenheit.
