General Percival

Thanks for reviewing (I Hoped you might!). I will try to complete the last few sections in the next few days Nickhk 00:15, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Nickhk

It's looking very good so far. I'm happy to help out, particularly when it looks like such a well-researched article. Leithp 09:17, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

on the ranks I was trying to be consistent rather than having any concept of the correct format - I'm happy to follow your guidance here Nickhk

I am happy to have a go with peer review - I will try to folow the instructions on the page reference you have given Nickhk

ta Nickhk

I think I have done as much as I can do for the moment (I am going back to the UK next week). Hopefully I will come back re-energised. What else do you think needs doing before putting it forward for featured article status? Nickhk

I can't think of anything else to add, but then that's why peer review is useful, to point out things you've missed. I don't think there's any harm in having it listed on PR for a while longer, but there's no rule against having it on PR and FAC at the same time (I don't think). Leithp 09:53, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

There is a good picture of Percival in 1921 in Hamilton's Montgomery book (referred to in the refs of the article - picture 24). It is entitled "Major A E Percival Cork 1921 (Imperial War Museum)". I have seen that other pics of this age from the Imperial War Museum have been uploaded to Wikipedia. Do you know how do this /whether it is in line with copyright law etc? Nickhk

The Imperial War Museum website gives the copyright status for every photo. Invariably it says that they're Crown Copyright. These claims are often rather dubious though, (see British copyright law). It's better to err on the side of caution, I think, so tag it with whatever the IWM says. Leithp 10:04, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
Does it give a photo number? I can't find it on the IWM website. Leithp 10:40, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

I have put him up as a FAC. Fingers crossed Nickhk

PD-BritishGov

It seems there is a template:PD-BritishGov which will cover crown copyright photos made before 1956. The email at [1] appears to confirm it is OK to use worldwide. Op. Deo 16:33, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Sound advice, this would cover all photos of WW2 vintage, obviously. Leithp 17:00, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks I have used that tag and uploaded the image (which I am also unable to find on the Imperial War Museum website). Come back soon! Nickhk

Thank you!

I would like to thank you for your support for my candidacy for the Military history WikiProject coordinator position. I am now the Lead Coordinator, and I intend to do my best to continue improving the project. If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding my actions, or simply new ideas for the project, be sure to let me know! —Kirill Lokshin 00:08, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Re rfa

Technically a discussion hasn't finished until the page is removed from the rfa page by a bureaucrat or other admin: points of discussion have been accepted in rfa cases beforehand and I don't see why this should be any different. If RDH wishes to make a complaint he is more than welcome to leave a message; in the meantime I don't appreciate the accusatory tone you used in leaving me a message and would suggest you would get a better response from me if you were more civil in the first place. -- Francs2000 19:01, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Wikibreak: you and me both. On action and reason behind it. -- Francs2000 20:43, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
As I stated, I have no hard feelings against YOU. I have no intention of filing any complaint. Any ill will I or Leithp have is directed in other directions. Sorry you got caught in the crossfire.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 11:09, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Make sure the break really is "short"!

I respet your decision, Leith! I've been tempted to enforce a break for my self, but never had the strength to stay away (I simply went over to Wikinews and the commons for a while ;-)). I hope you come back soon.....Wikipedia's losing so many good editors right now, and that urgently needs to be stemmed. I have faith that Esperanza will one day come to the rescue of this community, and that the community itself has the resolve to get through these turbulent times. Take care, and don't antagonise any highlanders if you visit the bumpy north of Scotland! ;-) SoLando (Talk) 21:23, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Muchus gracias, Joel. And I'm from the bumpy north (well, the hilly north-east), so I wasn't too worried about that. I actually couldn't stay away totally and did a few anon edits, and told off an admin for warning me incorrectly, which was quite funny. Anon editors have it pretty rough these days, a few of my decent (I thought) edits were rolled-back or "rvv"-ed on the day's FA. I don't think a lot of vandalism patrollers bother to look any more. Leithp 21:19, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
So is it the north-east safe for Englishmen in chainmail these day? It does get chilly! ;-). I've been using the CDVF tool, and it does make one quite impulsive, effectively reducing any inclination to scrutinise anon edits when the screen is being "deluged". Still, 99% of the time, most RC patrollers will make the correct decision.......unless I'm a wiki-idealist, then just disregard that ;-) It's great to have you back. Incidentally, thanks for rv'ing vandalism to my user page! It's nice to know i've not been entirely forgotten :-D SoLando (Talk) 17:05, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

My admin request went up in flames. (But thanks anyways!)

Hey, Leithp, I wanted to thank you for your support of my (unfortunately unsuccessful) request for adminship. The final tally was 37/16/5, which fell short of the needed 75-80% for "consensus". Thanks for voting for me even though I was a lost cause by that point. It made me feel a lot better! I don't know if or when I'll go up for nomination again, but even if I don't, I will try not to betray the trust that you and 36 others were willing to place in me. Thanks for having faith in me... and happy editing! Matt Yeager (Talk?) 01:22, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, it's Wikipedia's loss. I thought I might inspire a late rally but, like Scotland's comeback against the Welsh this afternoon, it was too little, too late. Give me a shout if you're trying again (I don't think that counts as advertising if I'm asking you to do it). Leithp 21:23, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Bastards and not letting them get to you

Hey, the words of wisdom you wrote on my talkpage apply equally well here. But if you must take a break, please make it a short one. You are one of the best Wikipedians around all around. Overall there is still a lot more good, exciting and interesting things going on here, than negative. I thought I'd need a break too for my faith to recharge. But it was restored a lot more quickly than I thought. May it be the likewise with you, bro--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 11:26, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

I realised when the arbcom elections were on that it was all absurd, and now I've concluded that 90% of the non-article stuff is crap as well, particularly policy. So I've removed myself from the poisonous mailing list and am away to purge my watchlist. What do you think of the (semi) rant I put up on my user page? Leithp 21:34, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. Avoiding non-article shyte is a good policy for staying happy, or at least content (especially any pages with For, Request, Admin or Meta in their titles :). Unfortuneately it is easier said than done sometimes, with all the edit/wheel warring that's been going on of late. As your vacation experiment shows, even anon editors arent safe anymore. So much is broken or in need of repair/reform, it's amazing anything still works at all. Yet somehow it does. As a connisieur of organized chaos, this alone fascinates me. So try as I might, I cant stay away completely either.(Oh and Welcome back! officially ;)--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 22:24, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

Thank you
Hello Leithp, and thank you for your support in my request for adminship! It passed with a final count of 63/4/3. I am honoured by the community support and pledge to serve the project as best as I can. CanadianCaesar The Republic Restored 16:54, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
It looks like it was well earned. I'm not sure I get the mouse reference though..... Leithp 21:35, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
It's just a bit of patent nonsense. :-) I thought it was cute. CanadianCaesar The Republic Restored 21:46, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
I don't know about that, admins aren't allowed a sense of humour. You better sort that out. Although, as you say, it is cute. Leithp 21:49, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

WP:AN/I

Thanks for the info.--Mais oui! 14:33, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Please advise

I tried to start an article on James Gavin, but it seems to have disappeared. Your comment is associated with it, so perhaps you removed it. In any case, my effort was merely a starting point about an interesting and notorious individual who was possibly murdered in prison in Bali. As an American who made Indonesia his home, Gavin was a member of the generation that took Timothy Leary's advice to heart and "dropped out." He was a friend to many itinerant artists, writers, and actors, including Bill Murray, Graham Nash, and John Lennon, some of whom stayed at his compound in the Seminyak area north of Kuta Beach. To these celebrities, he was known as "Bali James."

Most baby boomers stayed stateside, worked corporate jobs, started families, and pursued the American dream, but individuals like Gavin represent a fascinating element of the counterculture that is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, and appears to be under-reported. I am new here as a contributor, however, so your assitance in advising what I should have done to prevent erasure will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Asingleton-green 07:27, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

The part I deleted from the James Gavin disambiguation page read: "James Gavin, American businessman who lived in Bali, Indonesia. He was born in 1950 in Virginia. He was married three times.". There wasn't a link to an article and there was no assertion of notability (see WP:CSD A7). If you wrote an article that had the same problem then it may well have been deleted. Do you remember what the title of the page was? I can retrieve the deleted content from the database if you want to have another bash at it, bearing in mind that you'll have to make reference to his importance as you did in the note above. Unfortunately, this kind of thing is a necessary evil as far as Wikipedia goes. If you take a look at the new pages you'll see why administrators can be quite ruthless in deleting new articles. Leithp 09:37, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Pardon my ignorance, but how does one create an article? As indicated earlier, what I initially submitted was merely intended as a starting point, with text, pictures, and links to follow. If I understand you correctly, my innocent transgression was to do this on a disambiguation page. Here are two external links that relate to Gavin's demise, one containing an assertion of possible complicity in his death by the authorities (www.fugly-bali.org/police.html), and the other containing extensive information on what may be a parallel case of westerners getting framed (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schapelle_Corby). Corby and Gavin were both held at Kerobokan prison on questionable drug charges. I do not assert the innocence of either, but Gavin's fate surely informs the level of danger facing Corby today. These other external links refer to CV Krakatoa, one of the many successful businesses that Gavin started to serve the ex-pat community in Bali (www.poonja.com/Sanga2.htm),(www.divingpersonnel.com/companies/area/ asia/page1.html?dpsid=acdac3b0d5042b5d8544aa2b2770a78e), (www.ccclsurabaya.com/Francais/liens.htm). Your patience and guidance are much appreciated. Asingleton-green 17:46, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Go back to the James Gavin disambiguation page and add in a short bit of text about "your" James Gavin, making a note of why people might be interested in him as you've outlined above. Make his name a wiki-link, i.e. use something like [[James Gavin (businessman)]]. The link will appear red and if you follow the link then you can create the article. Remember to cite your references, so the information is verifiable. If you need any other assistance with the mark-up or anything, just give me a shout. Leithp 18:16, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Timber Bush

In one of my frequent Google searches of Wikipedia (their search engine is much better than the in-house one) I came across this:

As an Edinburgher, I do have a vague childhood recollection of the term, and gave it a minor Wikifying, but you seemed the perfect candidate to lick it into shape.--Mais oui! 10:14, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

King in Briefs

How can King in Briefs be blocked already if he managed to do this? I know his page says he's blocked, but he somehow edited the page. Please explain. Rlevse 11:21, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Also, 83.70.148.110 page does not show him as blocked, why did you say he's blocked? Rlevse 11:23, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

See 110's log and King in Brief's log. Curps didn't leave a message when he blocked the IP for some reason, I've now done so. All King in Brief's contributions came prior to the block. Leithp 11:50, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Okay, Thanks. It's a shame good users like you and I have to waste our time on these scumbags. At a minimum, the main page article should be protected as it's like a light that draws bugs. Rlevse 12:31, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
I have mixed feelings about protecting the day's featured article. At one point I was all for leaving it unprotected, but at the moment that isn't working so I think semi-protection should be applied. As you say, all this vandal fighting is a complete waste of everyone's time. My only worry is that vandals would just attack less visible pages instead. Leithp 12:35, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
At least you're thinking of protecting it. On another note, no one has acted on 194.66.199.249 yet. Can you check into it? Rlevse 12:53, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
There's been nothing from 194.66.199.249 since the last warning, leave it up on WP:AIV to monitor for the time being. As for protecting Today's Featured Article, someone does it every week or so and is reverted quickly. There's a strong lobby, lead by Raul654, which opposes protection. It's an on-going problem and, like most problems on Wikipedia, the current strategy is to ignore it and hope it goes away. Leithp 13:09, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
That's no surprise, when the done is done, I'll write a wrap up of today's vandalism and leave it on Raul's talk page. My best argument is likely that how does it look when a new user looks at the main article and he/she sees a close up of a human penis? --this occurred today. Rlevse 13:13, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
It happens every day. Leithp 13:19, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
It should be stopped. Rlevse 14:25, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

more vandals

Bravo to you on blocking 64.251.53.99 ! Rlevse 14:25, 22 February 2006 (UTC) I reverted him too and didn't get a write error, so we must have done it at the same time. Rlevse 14:26, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

All part of the service. :-) Leithp 14:28, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
I think even Elle would see a pattern here: "*67.140.125.15 (talkcontribslogsblock userblock log) vandalized the main page 3 times today (last time with "FUCK YOU"), plus vandalized United States, AND been warned several times in the last 4 days." Rlevse 20:34, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, the main page should definitely be semi-protected. I remember trying to read Sino-German cooperation (1911-1941) a couple of weeks ago. I had to search through the history to find a readable, unvandalised version. We can't expect newcomers to Wikipedia to do that. Leithp 20:42, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Why has no one blocked 67.140.125.15? He's had several warnings in just the last few days. Rlevse 21:48, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
They're already blocked. I misunderstood your previous message, I didn't realise you were asking me to block them, as there was already a block in place. Leithp 21:51, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Yup, I could have worded that better. Thanks. BUT there is no block symbol on his page. Rlevse 21:53, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Nevermind, you just put it there I see. Rlevse 21:54, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Yeah for some reason Curps isn't putting the notice up at the moment. Curps has blocked about 40 IPs today and hasn't done that for any of them. Leithp 21:59, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Curps and you have been fast on blocking these scum, but I think putting the notice up is important. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP. Rlevse 22:00, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Scouting Barnstar

Rlevse 03:23, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! I was never a scout as a kid (Boys' Brigade is more popular in Scotland), so I accept my first scout badge with honour. Leithp 08:15, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
No problem. Click on the badge image for more image and a list of recipients. The vandalism died off 9 minutes after it came off the main page. I hope it stays that way.Rlevse 11:21, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

I need Some help

I think I have discovered som vandleism and do not know how to revert to a previous edition. The article is Battle of Vimy Ridge and someone has posted like fifty Swastikas on the page. Would you help me please to revert the page and stop the repeated vandal. Every time I refresh the page a new Swastika appears. (Steve 15:30, 23 February 2006 (UTC))

Never mind it was handle thank you. (Steve 15:32, 23 February 2006 (UTC))
Sorry, I missed that as I was away from my computer. It seems to have been handled though and I also extended the block. A good place to ask for help with this kind of vandalism is WP:AIV. A lot of administrators keep that page on their watchlist so you can usually get assistance very quickly. Thanks for the alert. Leithp 15:41, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
Thank you. Hey, is there a Vandlism task force? A group was a goal tohunt down vandals? (Steve 15:47, 23 February 2006 (UTC))
There is indeed. They're called the Counter Vandalism Unit. They do a pretty good job and they're always looking for volunteers if you're interested..... Leithp 15:56, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Thank You

Thank you for helping to deal with the vandal who attacked my userpage, and reverting my userpage. I wanted to leave the personal attack on there until an admin could see it, or I would have reverted it myself. --Measure 20:22, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Unfortunately some people don't seem to understand that the ability to edit anything doesn't mean that you can post anything. Leithp 20:25, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for blocking this guy [2] for long period of time. It was very annoying to do the cleanup after him again and again. Pavel Vozenilek 21:48, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

No problem, happy to help. Leithp 21:55, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Proposal

Hey, I have posted a policy change proposal on the Wikipedia talk:Editing policy page. I would your opinion and all Wikipedia members with accounts. Please. (Steve 21:26, 24 February 2006 (UTC))

I'm afraid that I don't agree with your proposal, though I understand the sentiment behind it. Perhaps unregistered editing will become impossible to sustain as Wikipedia expands but for the moment i support it. I tend to think that we should be concentrating on creating more efficient ways to monitor recent changes, there's a lot of overlap and inefficient use of resources there. Leithp 21:57, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Suspicious activity

Pls see my user page for a suspicious entry by LaRevolution. The mere wording made me suspicious, but my question is: Why can he edit my page if he has an indefinite block? Rlevse 02:23, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

He left your message at 15:31 (server time), and was indef blocked by Doc glasgow at 22:40. I had a look at the messages and tend to agree that it's a TJWhite sock-puppet, see TJWhite's userpage before it was blanked. If they wanted to reform Wikipedia, using a sock-puppet to spam people is a pretty bizarre way to go about it. Leithp 08:08, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Smog albums

Hey, sorry I didn't contact you before I edited, but I've removed the 'genre - alternative' from the album-pages. Before you get angry: 1. good work making the album pages. it's about time. i'm willing to add content when i have more time. 2. 'alternative' is a very bad genre-name imho. It sounds like if it weren't for celine dion, smogs music wouldn't be music, or something of the kind. I don't think this kind of music is 'different', it's as normal as other music. Agree? Thanks, --Leo44 (talk) 11:31, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

A fair point, but I really don't know how to classify Bill Callahan's music, so I thought that would be a conveniently vague term. Why would I be angry? If I objected to people editing my work I wouldn't be on Wikipedia. I'm going to try and get some content as well, but I wanted to get the templates all sorted out first. Cheers. Leithp 12:14, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

I need Some help again

The User:SPUI has not only vandalized Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Squidward, but I consider his user page to be extremely obscene. I would like you to look into this and tell me if this user is violating Wikipedia standards or not. Reason being is my standards of obscene are set pretty high and i woul like you to make a judgement call. Thank You (Steve 00:55, 27 February 2006 (UTC))

The ducks in a pram picture? Does it have some kind of cultural significance I'm not aware of, or am I missing something obvious? Otherwise, I don't see the relevance of the picture but I don't see why it might be called obscene. Leithp 08:21, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, just re-read your question and it was SPUI's userpage you were referring to. Yes, at first glance it does look obscene (I didn't look at it in depth because I'm at work at the moment). I'm not entirely familiar with the policy regarding userpages, there was a very similar case recently at the Arbcom where a user had Nazi symbols on her page (see Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Deeceevoice#Offensive_user_page), the outcome was that she had to remove them. My advice with regard to his user page is "don't feed the trolls". SPUI is looking for an argument, I wouldn't give him one. He's averaging a block a week, he'll soon be permanently blocked if he carries on like this. Leithp 09:36, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism yet again from user 24.39.50.135

User 24.39.50.135 just vandalised Racism article a few minutes ago, but I have reverted to a previous edit. Shouldn't he be blocked indefinitely? The guy has a long track record of vandalism since November/2005, one week block is not enough.--Inahet 18:47, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

He just vandalised the article again. I will just wait until he is banned and then make the appropiate changes.--Inahet 18:47, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia policy is not to permanently block IP adresses, they may be used by multiple people or reassigned by the service provider, so I can't block permanently. I put in a two week block, because there is no need to warn an IP address that has been repeatedly blocked, like this one. Thanks for the alert. Unfortunately I was away from my computer at the time. A good way of getting the attention of administrators is on WP:AIV, most admins keep that page on their watchlist. Leithp 19:49, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Got time to lend a hand?

Sorry to bug you with a request for help, as I know you have more fun and useful things to do. But I'm getting hassle from someone who insists on stripping commas out of Panama Canal, and I'm trying to avoid an arbitration, which would be a huge waste of time. I've tried to handle this nicely — I even thanked him for his contributions — but he's refusing to discuss, and now threatening to unilaterally rv me. The whole sordid story is catalogued on my talk page.

If you'd like to help, there's two things you could do:

  • First, see whether you think I am, in fact, right, and if not, feel free to comment.
  • Second, maybe make a quiet comment on what you think a good resolution would be.

Thanks in advance, — Johan the Ghost seance 11:54, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Your grammar looks fine to me (although I am by no means an authority on this). The response to your first note was fairly belligerent so I imagine you're expecting this to continue? My experience of dispute resolution is fairly limited, the odd discussion on a talk page and a couple of RFCs, but I did have a similar experience when I edited [[Bernard Montgomery and had a wee spat with another user, who has now left following an Arbcom case (not anything to do with my argument though). You should probably raise a note on the talk page asking for others input. It's unlikely to go further, people behave a lot differently once the debate has moved to a public forum. He wouldn't get away with the kind of attitude he displayed in his reply to you for a start. Leithp 13:12, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. Yup, moving this to the talk page would be great, as it would give other people a chance to chip in — if he edits again, I'll do that, regardless of whether he responds to talk requests. It's nice to have your point of view, though; when I'm arguing a case on my own, I just don't feel like I have much authority. Cheers, — Johan the Ghost seance 14:04, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Block of 205.213.5.250

Hi, you made a block of the above IP address at 14:19 [3], however, by 16:25, that IP address was vandalizing Communism. Could you block again. Thanks. --BostonMA 16:33, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out, I've now blocked it for 24 hours. I'm very wary of blocking public IPs (I get my inbox filled with indignant emails), hence the short initial block. Leithp 16:38, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. --BostonMA 16:49, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

I remember, "What made Milwaukee famous, made a loser out of me" isn't it? Boston, where I guess BostonMA is from, is a great place though. It's a bugger for a pub crawl though, the bars are too spread apart. I had a good attempt at it though.Leithp 22:31, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Question

I'm wondering what templates/scripts do you use to write for instance: "Reverted edits by 129.143.4.66 (talk) to last version by Wayward"? Or do you write it manually? Thanks, ---Marcus- 11:49, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

The admin rollback tool automatically generates that summary. I think that the godmode lite script has a similar effect, but I've never used it. Leithp 11:51, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Steve Strange

Hi Nicholas, I'm just dropping you a note to say that I've undeleted Steve Strange, which you speedied last month. Although the content at the time was nonsense (I didn't restore that part), it had overwritten a legitimate article. Have a good weekend. Leithp 13:24, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Great to see that you were able to revive the article with legitimate content! -- user:zanimum

My RFA

Thanks for participating in my RfA. It passed with a final tally of 98/13/10, just two short of making WP:100. If you need my help with anything, don't hesitate to ask.

More details on 204.213.244.18?

You indicate, on the block page, that this vandalicious IP belongs to a school. I'd be interested to learn of any steps the school is taking to curtail abuse, and how we could help. I.e., if their machines are password-controlled, knowing the exact times of vandalism and comparing to a login list would narrow things down considerably. Would you consider summarizing the email you received for the benefit of the public? eritain 07:41, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Okay, essentially the gist of the email was that the teacher thanked me for applying a block, and acknowledged that there had been a child misusing Wikipedia who had sice been disciplined. He also said that he was considering using Wikipedia in a class and asked advice. I recomended getting the kids to have user accounts, so they would have a user-space and he could easily monitor their activity. It's disappointing to see that there is some vandalism again from this account, but I don't think it's time to panic yet. What are your thoughts? Leithp 17:15, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

206.166.54.246 caused more vandalism

Subject says it all. I looked at User_talk:206.166.54.246 and it appears to be a High School IP number (probably an unsupervised library computer). This IP has been frequently warned (probably random kids, so warnings are futile). I recommend that this IP be permanently blocked. You blocked this IP number before. Could you please do the follow-through on this? Thanks! Egg plant 17:16, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid that the current policy is not to block anonymous IPs indefinitely, all we can do in cases like this is apply short-term blocks as and when required. In cases like this we generally apply 1-3hr blocks to avoid blocking legitimate users as collateral damage, a lot of legitimate editors use school or college computers. So all I can really do is to advise that, if you see vandalism like this, you post a note on WP:AIV to get an admin to short-term block. Not much use I'm afraid. Leithp 17:04, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. It's pointless but I'll make my parting comment and then let it go. The probable reason why that IP number is vandalizing Wikipedia is because some school librarian is not doing their job. Besides vandalizing Wikipedia, those kids are probably doing all sorts of mischief on the Internet. By blocking that IP number, this abuse might(?) be brought to the attention of some other functionary at that school. Anyway it's not my problem. Thanks again. Egg plant 05:10, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Welcome back

In case you didnt find any decent beer in Swissland

Hope you had fun in the land of timepieces, confectionaries and militant neutrality. Welcome back M8;>--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 00:14, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

I had a great time although I'm now rather tender from one too many falls on the slopes. They had German weissbeir, so I was happy (the local beer was a rather dull lager). Anyone for fondue? Leithp 07:49, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
As you've been allowed to return to Britain, I guess you never consumed any cheese! ;-) Great to see you back, dude. The main page is looking rather funky. Alas, I fear it won't be compatible with "insomniacs" :-( And Ghost, it's great to see you back as well. Keep the faith :-) SoLando (Talk) 17:22, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I noticed the changes on the main page. I'm not sure I approve, though maybe I just need to get used to it. Leithp 19:45, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Me-262

Why did you change the link to the generic jet, when it was linked to the Me262, which was the jet that the article is talking about when it said that jets were used in the war? It wasnt' talking about the Meteor, as that jet didn't see combat. Drogo Underburrow 14:12, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

The Meteor was certainly in service during the war wasn't it? The fact it didn't take part in air-air combat with other aircraft says more about the state of the Luftwaffe at that point than about the operation of the jet. In any case Jet aircraft gives a nice history of the service of jets in WW2. Isn't that sufficient? Leithp 15:04, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, the Meteor was in service, but the Me262 was in service before it, and saw combat. What have you got against linking to it? I don't really care, just seemed strange to me that you would go to the trouble of unlinking what seemed to me a logical informative link. The Me262 was the first and only jet fighter of the war that saw much service; it also was by far the best, and influenced later fighter development. Drogo Underburrow 15:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
The Heinkel He 178 was really the first turbojet. If anything, it should be linked instead of the 262, when talking firsts.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 15:29, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
I didn't like linking to one specific type of jet when it wasn't the only one in service. It would be like me saying: "around 2000 tanks were destroyed during the Battle of Kursk". Leithp 15:33, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I see your point. Drogo Underburrow 15:35, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the manoeuvres

No problem. Commonwealth English vs US English arguments are tediously common on Wikipedia and using the popularity card based on a google search is a bit daft. How many CwE users are there in Africa and India? The internet is not a representative slice of humanity. Leithp 19:08, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
