Dr. Leila Alice (Daughtry) Denmark, M.D. (born February 1, 1898, in Georgia) is an American pediatrician. She has been credited as co-developer of the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine in the 1920's-1930's. She was the oldest practicing pediatrician in the world, having retired at the age of 103 in 2001.
She has a very specific philosophy in child-rearing, and spelled this out in her book, Every Child Should Have A Chance, published in 1971. She was among the first doctors to object to cigarette smoking around children, and drug use among pregnant women. In 1998, another book, Dr Denmark's Book of Everyday Wisdom, was published.
She also feels that drinking cow's milk is harmful, and that children (and adults) should eat fruit instead of drinking their juices, and drink only water.
She currently resided in Alpharetta, Georgia USA until at age 106 she moved in with her daughter. Dr. Denmark now lives in Athens, Georgia.
