[edit] History
[edit] Tekken 2 - 3
During Tekken 2 and Tekken 3, Lei was a respected police officer, dubbed "super cop", who put countless criminals behind bars. He was investigating the illegal hunting and trading of endangered animals done by the Mishima Zaibatsu during Tekken 2 and fought Bruce Irvin, his old partner who was working for Kazuya Mishima. Lei defeated Bruce who escaped in an airplane which crashed. Before Tekken 3 he is investigating the drug dealer Bryan Fury, before Bryan is "killed."
[edit] Tekken 4
In Tekken 4, he sets out to stop the English Mafia and the assassin, Nina Williams, who was sent to kill a British boxer, Steve Fox, in order to restore his waning reputation. He tracks down Nina and prevents her from killing Steve, but he could not stop her from escaping through a window. Upon chasing after Nina, he had her at gunpoint, but Steve intervened and saved Nina by tackling Lei to the ground.
[edit] Tekken 5
Lei enters The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 to search for Feng Wei, the man that has been destroying dojos in China and Japan. Asuka Kazama is also searching for Feng because he nearly killed her father, who was one of the dojo owners sought by Feng Wei. He is also attempting to destroy the Mishima Zaibatsu with the help of Steve Fox.
[edit] Game Endings
Tekken 2 (Canon)
- Lei is practicing his shooting skills on a firing range. He has shot the words 'The End' onto his target with his pistol.
Tekken 3 (Canon)
- Lei is training in a garden using cups and swords. He throws his training sword to one side and rests in the arms of a Buddha statue.
Tekken Tag Tournament (Non Canon)
- Lei is practicing his moves in an area that looks similar to Forrest Law's second Tekken Tag Tournament arena. He performs a few punches, kicks, stances, and an aerial flip. Finally, he stops, ending in a stance with both of his arms stretched out. One of his arms is in front of him, and his other arm is behind him. The move that he executes at the end, Overhead Flip Kick, became a usable move in Tekken 4.
Tekken 4 (Non Canon)
- Lei has tracked the mafia's hired assassin to a hotel room. He ambushes the assassin and yells "Freeze!" The assassin, Nina Williams, shoots a few bullets at Lei, who avoids them. Then, Nina escapes out the window and down a drainpipe, with Lei following her. The two run past Nina's target, Steve Fox, who tackles Lei to the ground. Lei manages to fire a shot that hits Nina in the leg. Afterwards, Lei is shown on the front page of the newspaper. He chuckles at it. He is on top of the police world again.
Tekken 5/Dark Resurrection (???)
- Before Lei is able to enjoy his victory at the tournament, he returns to Hong Kong for a new investigation. Then, Lei is shown fighting a criminal on the top of a bus (perhaps a homage to Jackie Chan's Police Story movies). Lei wins the fight, puts handcuffs on the guy he just defeated, and reports to his superiors through his walkie talkie. Lei does not notice the low road sign behind him, and he is knocked off of the bus. He lands on the street and on his back. Lei grunts in pain and says "Oww...That's gonna leave a mark".
[edit] Fighting Style
Utilizing Lei requires the use of all of his stances. His Five Form stances are Snake, Tiger, Dragon, Panther, and Crane. He also has the stances Drunken Master Walk, Phoenix, Play Dead and Back Turn. Lei has over 110 moves and most are done from stances. The easiest way to use Lei's Five Form stances is to side step during Razor Rush, but Crane can only be used after the Mid Kick. Lei is a trick class character like Yoshimitsu, but Lei is easier to use and faster.
In Tekken 5, his stances are easier to use and can be accessed by holding down a direction after an attack. Examples include holding forward after performing a side-step to double right punch (Drunken Master), doing the same with a single left punch (Tiger) or holding down after performing a low right kick (Snake).
[edit] Trivia
- According to the Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 books, Lei likes Sony's products and electronics, and his hobbies include watching movies and taking naps.
- Lei's ending movie in Tekken 3 where he trains with the plate and the eggs on the bamboo poles is inspired from Jackie Chan's movie "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow."
- Lei's character mould is identical to Jackie Chan's Police Story character Ka Kui—the two men are police officers and are displayed as workaholics. They also, unintentionally, create humor in their given circumstances (Lei's Tekken 5/Dark Resurrection ending features Lei arresting a criminal after a fight on the top of a bus and reporting back to headquarters, only to be knocked off the bus due to a road sign that hit him).
- Lei's first, traditional Chinese-looking costume is inspired from Jackie Chan's clothes in the film "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow." His second one is inspired by the film "Police Story."
- His fighting style is also inspired from Jackie Chan films: his five-animal stance is a direct reference to Jackie Chan film "Spiritual King-Fu" and his drunken stance is inspired by Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master" films.
- Lei is voiced by Hiroya Ishimaru, a professional voice actor best known for voicing Koji Kabuto, the pilot of Japan's most loved classic giant robot, Mazinger Z. Curiously, he is the Japanese voiceover for Jackie Chan in almost all his movies dubbed to the language. Ishimaru speaks English in the Tekken series, however.
