User:Lego - cashman

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

During time in Recife in the North East of Brazil in 2004, I was given the nickname 'Galego' (which is commonly used in that area to refer to light skinned people) by a group of friends in Maracatu Nação Cambinda Estrela, it was pointed out by the Mestre of the group that a the real meaning of the word galego is 'native of Galícia' and as I was English, it wouldn't work. I stepped in and, anxious for a nickname, suggested that it be shortened to 'lego'.

cashman is my surname.

For a few years now, I have studied and worked with various musical groups and individuals in the Recife/ Olinda area of North Eastern Brazil. I have a keen interest in differing folkloric traditions of North Eastern Brazil, but I am not an 'academic'.

Having played Brazilian carnival Samba in London since 1996, I finally found out what it was really like on a holiday to Rio de Janeiro over carnaval in 2000, during which time I played and participated in the official parades in the Sambódromo. I returned to Rio in 2001 for a longer period which gave me more time for deeper research into Samba Schools and their music. After falling out of love with Carnaval Samba. I returned to Brasil in 2003, but this time to Recife and Olinda. I then discovered the reality of another Brazilian musical form - Maracatu Nação. I made another trip to Recife in 2004, but it wasn't until I returned in 2005 that I realised exactly what I had become involved in. I also discovered Cavalo Marinho and took up the Rabeca during this time.

I also run an amateur site - maracatu.net, which is under maintenance at the time of writing.
