Legacy Mode: (Software) The state of a computer software system that is no longer supported or upgraded by the original manufacturer yet continues to execute satisfactorily for the user(s) in perpetuity. In some cases, legacy mode refers to backward compatibility.

History and Current Uses: The computer mainframe era saw many applications running in legacy mode. In the modern business computing environment, n-tier, or 3-tier architectures are more difficult to place into legacy mode as they include many components making up a single system. Government regulatory changes must also be considered in a system running in legacy mode.


Future Outlook: Virtualization technology allows for a resurgence of modern software applications entering legacy mode. As systems complexity increases and software costs soar, many business computing users wish to keep their current systems forever.
