Ledøje-Smørum

Ledøje-Smørum is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Copenhagen County on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 31 km², and has a total population of 10,525 (2005). Its mayor is Jens Jørgen Nygaard, a member of the Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Smørum.

The municipality was created in 1970 as the result of a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that merged a number of existing parishes:

  • Ledøje Parish
  • Smørum Parish

Neighboring municipalities are Ballerup to the east and north, Stenløse to the north, Gundsø to the west, and Høje-Taastrup and Albertslund to the south.

By January 1, 2007 Ledøje-Smørum municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Stenløse and Ølstykke municipalities to form the new Egedal municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 126 km² and a total population of 39,267 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Hovedstaden ("Capital Region").
