Lebap Province

Lebap Province (Lebap welaýaty / Лебап велаяты) is one of the Welayatlar of Turkmenistan. It is in the northeast of the country, bordering Uzbekistan. Its capital is Turkmenabat (Түркменабат, formerly named Chärjew). It has an area of 94,000 square kilometers, and a population of 1,034,700 people.
It contains the Repetek Desert Reserve and the Kugitang Nature Reserve, which has Turkmenistan's highest mountain, Airababa (3137 meters).
Both Turkmen citizens and foreigners require special permission to visit parts of the province bordering Uzbekistan, as the government regards the border district as a "closed" border zone.
