[edit] Kicking Per Mertesacker
Cufré first kicked Mertesacker in the left thigh, then in the groin. This picture of Mertesacker after the fight shows the welts he received on his thigh.
Reportedly the Argentian team shouted insults at the Germans selected for the penalty shootout. Tim Borowski, one of the German shooters, then motioned them to shut up after he had scored the fourth and last German penalty goal. Some suspect that Cufré sought revenge for this gesture but mistook Mertesacker for Borowski. Not that this would make his actions any more defensible, of course.
As an interesting side note, both Cufré and Mertesacker bore/bear the number 17 in their respective teams. Aragorn2 18:12, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
- I've cleaned up the paragraph a bit and added a {{facts}} tag to the last sentence - is he really the fist player to be sent off after the whistle/without playing in the World Cup? I haven't seen any mention of it. Also, please don't change "violent conduct" to "kicking Per Mertesacker in the genitals" - it's redundant is not an official reason given for the red card.
