Leader Dogs for the Blind

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leader Dogs for the Blind is a guide dog training school located in Rochester, Michigan. It was founded in 1939 by Lions Club members, Charles Nutting, Don Schuur and S.A. Dodge [1]. It was the second guide dog school founded in the US after The Seeing Eye.

Dogs who have been trained there are called "Leader Dogs", just as dogs trained at The Seeing Eye are called "seeing eye dogs".

Leader Dog is a non profit organization, and all expenses: from room and board, to airfare, and, of course, the dog, are offered free of charge. However, one wishing to obtain a dog must provide proof of disability among some other things.

Leader Dog has a breeding colony consisting mostly of pure bred retrievers and German Shepherds, but they also accept dogs donated from the general public who are of fitting physical and mental character, and some dogs are even rescued from pounds and animal shelters.
