Le roi de Lahore

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Le roi de Lahore ("The king of Lahore") is an opera in five acts by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Louis Gallet. It was first performed at the Opéra in Paris on April 27, 1877.

Le roi de Lahore is Massenet's third extant opera and was his first major success in Paris, spawning performances across Europe and ensuring his place as the most popular composer of his time. At the occasion of the opera's centenary, in 1977, it was revived by the Vancouver Opera, Canada, starring Joan Sutherland and conducted by her husband Richard Bonynge, who both then also recorded the opera in the studio.
