Le Jour se lève (or Daybreak) is a 1939 French film directed by Marcel Carné and written by Jacques Prévert, based on a story by Jacques Viot. In the film, factory worker Francois (Jean Gabin) kills Valentin before locking himself in his room. As the film unfolds, Francois' motivations for murder are revealed. At the Venice Film Festival, Le Jour se lève was nominated for the Mussolini Cup. In 1952, the film was included in the first Sight and Sound top ten greatest films list.
