A fun loving, free-wheeling Brazilian spider monkey, Lazlo is one happy camper; when everyone else is bored he is having fun. However, with all the rules, routine, and structure of Camp Kidney, Lazlo and his best friends (Raj and Clam) have a hard time fitting in with the locals (namely Lumpus and Edward).

Lazlo's cheerful, idealistic attitude and overactive imagination towards solving problems doesn't always match Scoutmaster Lumpus' idea of how things should be done. A creature of simple pleasures, Lazlo is easily entertained (in one episode, he pretended his own hand was a toy airplane and "flew" it around) and seems to be in an almost perpetual state of happiness (in other words, he is happy almost all the time).
Lazlo is very optimistic, and there have only been a handful of times when his attitude has been noticeably negative ("Hello Summer, Goodbye Camp" was one of them, when Camp Kidney was almost shut down); these times are always very short-lived, and Lazlo quickly returns to his natural optimistic self. Lazlo is extremely friendly and compassionate, and seems oblivious to the fact that many of his fellow campers hate him for his attitude; he is undaunted by this and treats everybody as a friend, regardless of whether they love or hate him. Apparently, Lazlo is good at stacking beans and almost broke the world record. He also seems to have poor sense of history. In "It's No Picnic", he thinks Napoleon fought the Swiss on the Moon. In "Hello Summer, Goodbye Camp", it is revealed that Lazlo's neckerchief was previously owned by the Big Bean himself until he willingly gave it back. He is taken in many animals from the wild as his friends such as a snake, bear, llama, etc. He is a very skilled swimmer, like Clam. His favorite food is banana bread (Lazlo is a monkey, and loves bananas as most monkeys are portrayed as liking). Lazlo makes good hot dogs and often offends Chef McMuesli unintentionally. He follows codes and rules of the Bean Scouts and owns the Bean Scout Manual, much to Lumpus' annoyance. All the early episodes were mainly focused on him but as the show progressed into the second season, he is no longer the focus of some episodes, but still plays important roles. He nor any of the Jelly Bean Scouts appeared in "Miss Fru Fru". He also does not appear in "Spacemates". He is good at pinecone-sitting contests and Squirrel Scout Patsy has a crush on him that he is unaware of.
