[edit] Character history
Dr. Lawrence Gordon appears in Saw, where he, along with Adam Faulkner, find they've been kidnapped by the cancerous vigilante known as the Jigsaw Killer, and shackled to pipes on opposite sides of a grimy industrial bathroom. Between them, just out of their reach, is what would appear to be a dead man who shot himself in the head, lying in a pool of poisoned blood. A gun is clutched in one of the dead man's hand, with a cassette player in the other. Working together, Lawrence and Adam learn what they must do from a pair of cassette tapes which leave them with clues that will help them escape.
It is revealed on Dr. Gordon's tape that he is being tested because of his occupation, informing patients of their impending deaths. Lawrence learns that he must kill Adam by 6:00PM if he wishes to escape, also learning that if he doesn't, his wife and daughter will also die. Enclosed with this tape are a key and a bullet for the dead man's gun. Both Adam and Lawrence are supplied with hacksaws, which they find are unable to cut through their chains. It is then that Dr. Gordon realizes that they are meant to cut through their feet, not their chains.
By following the clues, Lawrence also manages to obtain a box (which his key opens) that contains a couple of cigarettes, a one-way cell phone, and a lighter. Also in the box is a note, meant just for him, that tells him that he doesn't have to shoot Adam, but could instead poison him with one of the cigarettes, if it were dipped in the toxic blood puddle.
He then informs Adam that he knows that the Jigsaw Killer is the one behind the "game", and reveals that he was once suspected to be Jigsaw after his penlight was found at one of the previous traps. He was proven innocent after his alibi held up. It turns out that Adam was hired to take pictures of Lawrence by Detective Tapp, who became obsessed with the idea that Lawrence was the killer after Tapp's partner, Detective Sing, was killed while pursuing Jigsaw.
Lawrence then receives a call from his daughter and wife telling him not to believe Adam. He then discovers that Adam had been taking pictures of him for Detective Tapp. It is then revealed that Lawrence has been cheating on his wife with another woman, which was his alibi for the crimes. It was when he was leaving the hotel, after breaking off his affair with a student of his, that he was kidnapped.
The two men run out of time, and Lawrence, desperate to save his family, cuts through his leg to free himself. He then crawls over to the corpes, takes the gun, loads it and shoots Adam in the shoulder.
Later, Zepp shows up in the bathroom. Lawrence, furious, tries to attack and shoot Zepp with the empty gun. Zepp is about to kill him when Adam attacks and kills Zepp by beating him with the toilet lid. Lawrence then tells Adam he has to go and get help for both of them or else he will bleed to death. Adam begs Lawrence not to leave, but Lawrence tells Adam he will bring someone back to save him. He then crawls out of the bathroom, his fate unknown.
The fact that there is no later mention of whether he lived or died has led to great speculation and debate within the fan community.Although Lawrence does not appear any other time in the series, he is mentioned in Saw 3 and you see his severed foot in Saw 2 and Saw 3. He also appears in a brief Saw 3 flashback. However, he is unconsious and doesn't have a speaking role.
