Lawrence Dutton is the violist for the Emerson String Quartet. He earned a Bachelor and Master's degree from the Juilliard School of Music where he studied with Lillian Fuchs.

He is currently on the faculty of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and at the Manhattan School of Music. Lawrence lives in Bronxville, New York with his wife, Elizabeth Dutton (a violinist), his three sons, Luke, Jesse, and Sam, and his dog, Ajax. His wife's eldest sister, Diane Lim, also studied at the Juilliard School of Music and has a husband, Andrew, and two daughters, Elissa and Kelsey Lim.
