A latte macchiato is a latte (espresso with steamed milk topped with foam), but instead of having the espresso shots on the bottom, the espresso is poured on top of the foam. These shots should also be ristretto shots, which are shots taken out about halfway through the duration of the pull. This shot contains the crema and some of the body, and is considered sweeter than a regular shot because it does not contain the "heart".

The name "latte macchiato" literally means stained milk, which refers to the preparation (wherein the "pure" white milk gets "stained" by the addition of espresso).
