Las Vegas Springs Preserve

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Las Vegas Springs Preserve consists of 180 acres dedicated to nature walks and displays and is owned by the Las Vegas Valley Water District. The Preserve is expected to open in 2007.

One of the objectives of the Preserve is to showcase and preserve the old springs that were the attraction that led to development around what is now Las Vegas, Nevada. The area protects the site of the artesian wells that provided the water for early Las Vegas. Plans call for the reconstruction of the well houses that protected the early pumps. The Springs are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Currently open is the The Gardens at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve which was previous know as the Desert Demonstration Gardens. The gardens are located accros the street from the Preserve. Additional garden space will be provided within the Preserve.

The Preserve is also intended to show people how to live in the desert environment and how to take advantage of what is available. Part of this project showcases a dual use concept. So the parking area is actually the roof of the reservoir. The shade structures in various areas are actually Photovoltaic cells used to generate power for the site.

The site is marked as Nevada Historical Marker 40.
