Larry Rothschild
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lawrence Lee Rothschild (born March 12, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois) is the pitching coach of the Chicago Cubs. He was previously the first-ever manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, from 1998 to the start of 2001, compiling a record of 205-294. Before that, he worked as a coach with the Cincinnati Reds from 1986 to 1993, the Atlanta Braves in 1994, and the Florida Marlins from 1995-1997.
As a player, Rotschild spent 7 years in the Detroit Tigers organization, but only made 7 appearances in the major leagues, all as a relief pitcher in 1981 and 1982.
Rothschild has been widely acclaimed as a pitching coach although his results with the Cubs have called this into question. Inheriting can't-miss prospects like Mark Prior, Kerry Wood and Carlos Zambrano, Wood and Prior have gone from the elite of National League pitchers to chronically injured on Rothschild's watch. Also, Rothschild has been criticized for the Cub's recent tendency to issue unnaturally high walk totals.
