I was born in Tumby Bay, South Australia, on September 15, 1958. While still only a few months old, my family moved to Adelaide, South Australia, where I have lived ever since. I worked in the Commonwealth Department of Health for six years, during which time I trained as a photographer. I joined Telecom Australia (now Telstra) as a photographer and worked there for seven years. In 1991, I went freelance, but retired from the world of photography in 2004. My photographs have been published in newspaper, magazines, pamphlets, brochures, and books. They have also appeared in television advertisements and promotional videos. I am planning to publish a full-colour book of my favourite photographs taken over the last two decades.
In 1994, while still a photographer, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts degree course at the University of Adelaide, ultimately earning an Honours degree (1998) majoring in psychology, followed by a Ph.D. in parapsychology (2002). In 1995, I received the Laurence T. Schneider Prize in Art History and Theories from the University of Adelaide. Since 1999, I have published dozens of articles in prestigious journals such as Psychological Bulletin, the Journal of Parapsychology, Journal of Scientific Exploration, and the Jungian journal Quadrant.
I am a full member of the Parapsychological Association, and the Australian Institute of Parapsychological Research, Inc. (AIPR), of whose journal the Australian Journal of Parapsychology I am current editor and a regular contributor. I am co-recipient with Dr. Michael A. Thalbourne, of the D. Scott Rogo Award for Literature (2002). In 2003, I was awarded the Gertrude R. Schmeidler Student of the Year Award for work in parapsychology. As a Research Fellow, I regularly conduct parapsychological research at the School of Psychology, University of Adelaide, where I assisted my colleague Dr. Thalbourne in establishing an Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit. In 2006, I launched two online courses in parapsychology for the AIPR’s website.
Besides my parapsychological career interests, my other academic interests include the psychology of motivation, emotion, perception, and personality. I am also interested in Jung’s concept of synchronicity, and I am currently preparing an anthology of articles on synchronicity dating back to 1969.
My other interests include writing, reading, film studies, bushwalking and travel. As a keen traveller, I have seen much of Australia, and I have spent time in the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Portugal, and Ukraine. I have written a nonfiction novel, Ukrainian Nights, which will be published soon.
