Lanyon High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lanyon High School is an Australian secondary school which opened in 1996. Located in Conder, it serves the Lanyon Valley in Tuggeranong, Canberra and surrounding rural areas.

Many students have nicknamed the school "The Lazy/Boring School" due to the fact that many teachers consistently replace normal class leasons with freetime outside.

In 2005 the total school population is 750, down from 830 in 2004. The fall can be attributed to slowing growth in the Lanyon Valley.

The principal is Mr Michael Hall and his deputy is Mrs Glenys Patulny.

The school operates on a split timetable with juniors (years seven and eight) and seniors (years nine and ten) having lunch and recess at different times. This split timetable was introduced in responce to overcrowding of ameneties, staffing shortages (meaning reduced supervision) and extreme cases of violence between the two levels.

[edit] Recent events

In 2004 the Commonwealth Bank gave Lanyon High school a financial literacy grant of 3,500 Australian dollars to set up a small business. This money was squandered on an attempt to sell Dominoes Pizza under the name "31220". This venture despite several clever adds by the Remedial Maths class met limited success.

In 2006,Lanyon played host to the launch of the BEACON FOUNDATION Program for Tuggeranong High Schools. There was no apparent meaning to this. It is widely considered as just a PR opportunity for the school's senior management. The principal was also reprimanded for spending considerable money on having the school grounds cleaned up by a Gardening Contractor in preparation for the launch where such dignitories as the Governor General wnd CEO of the Becon Foundation would attend.

In September 2006, the ACT Government spence $50,000 on resurfacing the school's oval which included replacement of the grass. The decision to do this at a time when the ACT is in drought and facing water restriction was received negatively by the community.
