In medicine, lanthanum carbonate is medication known as a phosphate binder. It sold under the trade name Fosrenol by the pharmceutical company Shire Pharmaceuticals. It is indicated for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia, primarily in patients with chronic renal failure. It is taken with meals and binds to dietary phosphate, preventing phosphate from being taken-up by the gut. Fosrenol is available as chewable tablets in four dosage strengths, from 250mg to 1,000mg.

To help people on restricted diets because of kidney disease, Shire Pharmaceuticals offers the “Kidney Friendly Comfort Foods” Cookbook, including low-phosphorus recipes by celebrity chef Katie Lee Joel.
