Langdon Warner

Langdon Warner (1881-1955) was a Harvard Professor. The model for Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones. Explorer-agent of at turn of the 20th Century. Studied the Silk Road. Served in US Army's Antiquities Division in WWII, was given credit for advising against use of the atomic bomb on Kyoto and other ancient cities to protect cultural heritage of Japan. Monument erected in Kyoto in his honor for this reason. Once travelled Gobi desert while in search of artifacts. Wrote extensivley, including "The Enduring Art of Japan".
