[edit] Overview
Langara is home to three rival nations living under a tenuous peace: Kelowna, Terrania, and the Andari Federation, each somewhat encompassing an entire continent. [1] Langara was under the collective administration of the Joint Ruling Council. [2] It is the homeworld of Jonas Quinn, a Kelownan who served on SG-1 for one year. The Kelownan nation was governed by a First Minister. [3] It is not known what organizational body governs the other nations, beyond the Joint Ruling Council.
Langara's technology had reached a level comparable to that of the United States in the mid-twentieth century. The Langarans have yet to develop jet propulsion and antibiotics. [3]
The planet is also the only location in the Milky Way where Naquahdriah, an unstable yet extremely powerful element related to naqahdah, is naturally occurring. It was also only recently named Langara by the Joint Ruling Council, as the word has its roots in an ancient language common to all three peoples. [2]
[edit] History
Langara had once been occupied by a Goa'uld, Thanos, who abducted the Langaran people from Earth some 3,000 years ago. He was also intrigued by the Naquahdriah, and experimented with it before nearly destroying the planet. It is unknown whether or not Thanos survived the accident, but eventually, Langara was abandoned by the Goa'uld, and it's people managed to build an impressive society.
When SG-1 first visited the planet, they met the Kelownans, in whose territory their sole Stargate was located. Kalowna was one of three superpowers battling for control of Langara, and these three nations had been at locked in a state of cold war with one another for generations.
SG-1 discovered the presence of the naqahdriah, a very unstable element related to naqahdah. The Kelownans were experimenting with this natural resource in order to construct a devastating bomb that would subdue their neighboring rivals at last. However, during an inspection of the experiment, the naquahdriah became unstable, and only because of the sacrifice of Daniel Jackson, who manually disabled the overloading naqahdriah generator and received a lethal dose of radiation in the process, an enormous catastrophe could be avoided. However, the experiments were continued. [1]
Over time the situation for Kelowna became extremely dire, after the Andari Federation and Terranian Confederacy struck an alliance against Kelowna. In a desperate last-ditch preemptive strike, the Kelownans attacked their neighbours with a naqahdriah bomb. The devastating weapon caused the three superpowers to return to the negotiation table, and both the Andari Federation and Terrania began secretly working on a bomb of their own.
However, after the Goa'uld Anubis learned of naqahdriah and its destructive capabilities by probing the mind of Jonas Quinn, the planet was attacked so that he could harvest Kelowna's supply of naqahdriah and enslave its people.
Anubis executed the Kelownan First Minister, Velis, and sent his troops to occupy the capital city. The Tau'ri sent SG-1 to assist the Kelownans in their fight against the Goa'uld, but it wasn't until the arrival of the newly-formed United Alliance of the System Lords that Anubis was defeated. Following the aftermath of the Goa'uld encounter, the three nations agreed to meet for peace talks to resolve their differences for the greater good of the planet. [4]
However, some time later it turned out that due to the experiments of the Kelownans with naqahdriah, they set off a potentially lethal chain reaction, which began to turn their naqahdah veins into naqahdriah. The Kelownans projected that if the chain reaction continued, the naqahdriah would spread to the heated core of the planet - and detonate, taking the planet with it. With the help of Jonas Quinn and Samantha Carter, the planet could eventually be saved from destruction. [2]
When the Ori invaded the galaxy, Langara was one of the many planets that fell to their rule. [5]
[edit] Background Information
The name Kelowna is a nod to the third-largest city in British Columbia, Langara is part of the name of the provincial electoral district of Vancouver-Langara, while the name Terranian is perhaps a nod to Terra, the Latin name for Earth.
