Lane Field (baseball)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lane Field is a former baseball stadium located in San Diego, California. The ballpark was home to the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League from 1936 to 1957.
Lane Field was located in downtown San Diego, at the end of West Broadway near the waterfront. The stadium had a capacity of 8,000 and was of wooden construction. Owing to the pressing need for a field for the Padres, whom owner "Hardrock" Bill Lane had relocated from the Los Angeles area, the ballpark was constructed in just two months for $25,000 by the Works Progress Administration.
The first Padres game at Lane Field was played on March 31, 1936 without a backstop for the field or a roof for the spectators. In 1937 a grandstand roof was added, and attendance improved.
The ballpark was abandoned by the Padres following the 1957 PCL season. In 1958 the team shifted to Westgate Park, located in San Diego's Mission Valley.
