Lamlash
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lamlash is the secondary village (after Brodick) on the Isle of Arran, situated in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. It has traditionally been the second most populated village on the island after Brodick, although in recent years its population has been bigger.[citation needed]
It is located on the southern half of the island, some three miles to the south of Brodick and five miles to the north of Whiting Bay, and sits on a bay in which the Holy Isle is located.
In common with the rest of the island the village's main industry is tourism. The only secondary school and only hospital in Arran are located in Lamlash, which was also the training place for Scottish 11 Commando during the early years of the Second World War. Locals were proud to be associated with The Black Hackle, the hat badge of this commendable group. It has an interesting history going back to the battle of Largs, and has been named as one of the best natural harbours in the world. Lamlash's population was 1,010 in the 2001 Census.
