List of stations of the Paris Métro |
Lamarck - Caulaincourt is a station of the Paris Métro named after the Rue Lamarck and the Rue Caulaincourt. The station has a very picturesque single entry (shown in the film Amélie) which is surrounded by two staircases ascending towards Montmartre. The platforms are 25 m below the entrance and are reached by a lift or a spiral staircase.
[edit] History of the name of the station
The station was originally intended to be called Constantin Pecqueur, but it was opened as Lamarck, then changed to Lamarck (Caulaincourt), and finally changed to Lamarck Caulaincourt.
Jean-baptiste Pierre de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck (1744 -1829) was a French naturalist and an early proponent of the idea that evolution occurred and proceeded in accordance with natural laws. Lamarck is however remembered today mainly in connection with a discredited theory of heredity, the "inheritance of acquired traits".
The marquis Armand Augustin Louis de Caulaincourt (1773-1827) was a general and ambassador to Russia of 1807 to 1811. He was Foreign Minister from 1813 to 1814.
