Lakes Estate

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lakes Estate is a large council estate in the North East England town of Redcar in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England.

The area was built mainly in the 1960s and 1970s to house the increasing population of Redcar. Many homes have been refurbished in the last 10-15 years but some have also been demolished , including the local shopping centre, Roseberry Square and its notorious residential neighbour, known locally as "the courts", which have been knocked down to make way for a new housing development. The Lakes Estate as a whole has suffered problems with high unemployment, drug abuse and crime and some areas could be considered run-down.

Locations in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.
