Lake Area Technical Institute is a respected technical institute in the northeast region of South Dakota. Located in Watertown, SD, the campus lies on 30 acres of land, which is home to seven buildings that are completely occupied with the latest technology.

In 1965, the founding fathers of technical education in South Dakota voted unanimously to organize the first technical school in Watertown, and soon after more would follow in Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. At the beginning the school started with one program and 16 students. Today the school has approximately 1300 full-time and part-time students, who attend 23 programs of study, which range from agri-business to cosmetology and from dental assisting and nursing to welding technology. The student to teacher ratio is 15:1, which allows students to receive personal attention from experience instructors. Students can receive their degree or diploma in 9-22 months and there is no out-of-state tuition. Also students who have previous college or high school classes may be given credit for some courses allowing students more time for their studies and saving money.

Lake Area Technical Institute has received high-ranking accreditation by The Higher Learning Commission, which is a member of the North Central Association. Many of the programs also have their own accreditation status. Over the previous forty years, Lake Area Tech has also received several state and national honors. Lake Area Tech consistently places 90% of its graduates in their training field.
