Laingsburg, Michigan

Laingsburg is a city in Shiawassee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,223 at the 2000 census.

Laingsburg is former farming community that has been transitioning over the last decade into a Bedroom community for larger cities such as Lansing, Michigan. The town itself is small, but the community includes a geography large area including two man-made lakes (Victoria and Scenic Lakes) and a large rural track. The community is unified be common postal service (zip code 48848) and school service.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.3 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.60% is water.

Laingsburg is located in proximity to the Michigan DNR’s Rose Lake research facility, and Sleepy Hollow State park. Laingsburg has posted exits on US 127 and US 69.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,223 people, 441 households, and 324 families residing in the city. The population density was 282.8/km² (733.6/mi²). There were 468 housing units at an average density of 108.2/km² (280.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.04% White, 0.16% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.41% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.74% of the population.

There were 441 households out of which 41.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 22.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.25.

In the city the population was spread out with 31.2% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $39,063, and the median income for a family was $47,656. Males had a median income of $33,889 versus $24,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,083. About 5.3% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.5% of those under age 18 and 7.0% of those age 65 or over.

The school system has one elementary school serving grades 1 through 5 (enrolment 451 as of 2006), a single middle school serving grades 6-8, a single high school serving grades 9-12 (enrolment 451 as of November 2006), and an early childhood center serving grades young 5s through kindergarten. The school system received major physical updates in 2003.

Laingsburg's school mascot is the Wolfpack, their colors are red and white. Their athletics program compete in the Central Michigan Athletic Association.
