[edit] My userbox page
I take it that you are using IE and not FireFox. In FireFox they were fine, but IE really screws things up. I just looked at the userboxes that I have made in IE, and I think that I will go scream now. Half the images which have transparent backgrounds in FireFox are not transparent in IE. I never thought to check IE for compatibility. walks away muttering deprications against IE - LA @ 11:28, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Userbox categorization
[edit] Dear Aleena
Dear Aleena, I've just noticed the great effort you're making to organize the tons of user templates - awesome work, congratulations! I couldn't help but to notice something tho, and since I am not sure whether you intended to make it that way or not, I thought I might ask. You created Category:Musican fan user templates, and you are currently updating all Musician fan templates there - note the missing i in Musician. If this is simply a typing mistake, I can gladly help you correct it at all the templates that go within it, otherwise... just ignore what I said :) Big hugs, Phædriel ♥ tell me - 22:44, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- It'll be my pleasure, dear - please, go on with other stuff and leave that Category to me. I have to finish some stub sorting and a few more thing I was doing right now, but I'll dedicate all my Wiki-time tomorrow to that, sounds ok? Btw, your great effort is much appreciated, hun - don't diminish yourself! Big hugs, Phædriel ♥ tell me - 23:03, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

- I'll do it myself, dear Aleena - don't worry ;) I just got home, so I've been unable to give a hand today, but I'll get to it immediately, and if I run out of time, I'll continue tomorrow, I swear. Hugs! :) Phædriel ♥ tell me - 21:36, 4 July 2006 (UTC) This will be a daunting task, as you said, dear... but I'm game ;) I've been having a look and it'll take detectivesque work, so I'll see what I can do between today and tomorrow, it's a promise - Phae

- No, I had not figured it out yet, hun (tho it was just a matter of time - yeah, as if! ;) That will certainly help me detect them easier, thanx dear! [edit] About Category:User_templates
Aleena,
I noticed you removed the [[Category:User_templates]] statement from my user page, which is reasonabl, since that category is for all templates beginning with "User", not user pages.
I was thinking if it would be appropriate to remove that reference from all user pages using it. If you agree with me, drop me a note on my talk page. I will start removing all user pages from that category, after your confirmation.
Regards,

ERS is short for Egyptian Rat Screw. --Genius00345 19:09, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
I also added another card game that I like to play. It's called "President", and its article is at President (game). It's also not in the template. --Genius00345 21:58, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] I see that you paid my page a visit
...and that you're very busy here on Wikipedia! Yes, you deleted all of the card game userboxes that I'd created back when I had more time on my hands. I was refurbishing these with icons that were specific to certain games (like the 10♦ for Cassino, pr the K♥ for Barbu) to help distinguish the different card game userboxes from one another. Some of these games are played with the same equipment and many are not (card games like Tarock, Scopa and even Skat are played with different decks) and even card games that share common elements can be as different as chess and checkers. Having distinguishing userboxes for different games helps us understand the areas of expertise of a card-playing user (e.g.: I know a lot about Skat and that can lend itself to other German games such as Sheepshead, however I know nothing about Contract bridge, which tends to dominate the English-speaking world of card-players — all of this says a lot about my area of expertise as a card-player and perhaps as a person in general). To homogenize all of this runs equivalent to replacing icons for Sontarans and Cybermen with that of Daleks because the latter is happens to be the more recognizable figure.
That said, thank's for the "hope you don't mind" note. Truth is, I don't mind, or even really care. I put userboxes on my page because they were fun and a good exercise for learning Wikipedia. It does feel a bit intimidating to have someone with a userpage as fancy as yours go about mucking around in my humble little userpage, but I'll probably wait until this whole "German Solution" thing has passed or settled before I make any adjustments to my page. Then I'll go and rack up my vandalism counter and go to bed. — Morganfitzp 06:27, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] RE: Card game user templates
Dear Think Fast, I have been on a mission to reduce the amount of user templates by merging like ones together by using parser functions for the differences. Recently I made a master card game template based on your work. After enough people switch to the master template, I would like to put your individual ones up for deletion. Now, I am hoping that you will not be hurt by this. You can see the master template at Template:User card games. I have put a little message on all but 4 of those templates on your user page to see the master template. Hopefully you will not be angry with me when you read this. Thank you for your great design.
—Lady Aleena talk/contribs 05:24, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- I am not mad in the slightest about the master template. In fact, I am honored that you are using my design for the master template. There seem to a few templates that differ from what can be created with the master template. These templates are cassino, cribbage, golf, mus, sheepshead, skat, tichu, and truco. It seems to me that in the end it wouldn't matter at all just to go with the master template. This would lead to better organization and would reduce the number of total userboxes. My vote is for ignoring that they are different. Good luck with your work and let me know if you need help! --Think Fast 00:25, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dr. Who Userbox
Nothing so complicated as what you were suggesting, or even what you seemed to think I was suggesting.
Dr. Who | This user has been a Doctor Who fan since the 6th Doctor. | 6th |
By using the numeric redirects to access the Doctor articles, you don't need to utilize the switch code. They just add "|6th" onto the template name to get the above. It does the exact same thing as yours with its "switch" code, but it's simpler. The only downside is it requires the user type an extra 2 letters, which I think they can handle. --tjstrf 23:36, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
- Of course, the same thing won't work for your other boxes, but I just thought that in this case, where the different templates are differentiated by numbers, that there was no need to go into such complex coding when you were attempting to save space in the first place. --tjstrf 00:02, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Lord of the Rings
So far, I've liked what you've done with combining the similar multiples. I have a challenge for you (though perhaps it isn't much of one).
Combining the {{User LOTR}} templates.
"This user loves The Lord of the Rings"
Text constants:
- book series
- film trilogy
- 1978 animated film
separators:
- , and the
- , or the
- , but not the
- , preferring the
- over the
(No comma with "over the" is not a typo)
And a period at the end, of course.
Just a few of the many possible examples:
- This user loves The Lord of the Rings book series
- This user loves The Lord of the Rings 1978 animated film, but not the film trilogy.
- This user loves The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, and the 1978 animated film.
- This user loves The Lord of the Rings book series, and the film trilogy, but not the 1978 animated film.
- This user loves The Lord of the Rings, preferring the book series, and the film trilogy over the 1978 animated film.

- I am guessing it's more than a variable for # of edits, and maybe a variable for the 3 colors of the userbox (square, rectangle, and text)?

- Maybe you're being "too" helpful : )
- Just make the variables for colour "blank", and optional at the end. Set the default colour (white and blue, grey and white, dk grey and lt grey, shrugs), and let each person set their own colour preference beyond that. - Jc37 05:20, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:User Monty Python
I see you've put most of the work into this template. It's got to be userfy'd in the next four or so days or it will be deleted. Since it's your baby, I thought I'd ask you if you wanted to keep it. I'm more than happy to stick it in User:BigNate37/TM/UBX/Monty Python and list it at User:BigNate37/TM/UBX if you'd rather not have it in your userspace. BigNate37T·C 23:43, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Do not under any circumstances userfy or delete this template. This template was created to replace all other Monty Python user templates in an attempt to show that GUS is not the only option available to gain control of user templates. I am violently and vehemently against GUS and the userfication of ANY template no matter how small. Please read my oppositional statement on the GUS. There would be no need for any templates to be moved into user space if there were fewer of them, and right now I am attempting to make that happen. The other redundant Monty Python templates should have been deleted, however, some users were so vocal that they were kept. Those templates you can do what you will with them. Just leave Template:User Monty Python alone; it stays where it is, where it belongs, in Template space. Do not move this template.

[edit] Time zone
Hello. I was wondering some things about usage of the new {{User time zone}}. Is there a way to use GMT offsets or piped links with the template? I would like to be able to set the variable once and not have to ever change it again. Right now I am GMT-5, and this works for me as I don't need to change it when I go on/off DST. I see that I can use EST as a template, but 1) that links to a dab page and I am really in North American Eastern Time Zone 2) I would have to change between EST and EDT. If I use UTC-4, once again, I would need to switch between that and UTC-5. Right now, I am using {{User time zone|North American Eastern Time Zone|watch}}, which is accurate, but looks a bit unwieldy. Any thoughts? Thanks --Brian G (Talk) 12:44, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Userbox listing
[edit] List of Userboxes
(cross posted at several talk pages) I found that list, but since it was so old, I decided to make a new one... manually... (I should have mentioned this to someone before, so that they could talk me out of it : )
Sooo, several hours of typing/pasting/etc later...
They aren't a "huge" mess... but some observations:
- 1.) We should have a better or clearer naming convention, or something.
- There is no standard to capitalising the first word after "User " (it's about 50% lower/upper case). This also means that there are many hundreds of userboxes that are listed twice, once with an uppercase second word, and once with the lower case second word (though more than a few are redirects).
- several userboxes have a dash (-) or NO space between "User" and the first word.
- greek, russian, etc. letters in the name.
- the use of punctuation, such as "/" "," "..." etc.
- 2.) Several appear to be attempts to make userified templates. I'll work on moving those to each user's userspace.
- 3.) Many (very many) religion/politics ones are "back" in template space, it would appear that they just apparently "accidentally" haven't been added to the Userboxes sub-pages.
- 4.) there are more userbox redirects than the number of userboxes on a single subpage : )
- 5.) Oh, quantity of userboxes = 10027 (though that includes redirects, and 118 templates that have "user" as the initial word (though some of those have "userbox" as the first word). So it's roughly 10 thousand userboxes in template space. ouch.
Can I run away screaming now? : )
