Lady Kale, also known as Princess Kale (and self-proclaimed Queen Kale for two episodes; also using alias of Madame Lapin), is one of the leading villain characters on the animated television series Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders. She is a sorceress who uses her magic for evil purposes as she tries to take over the throne of Avalon.

[edit] Overview

Being an elder Princess of Avalon, Kale firmly believed that she, not her sister Anya, should rightfully become the next ruler of the land. However, Merlin did not grant her the Sun Stone which would have given her the power to become the queen, as he judged her unworthy, and instead he gave that precious jewel to Anya. After angry Kale attempted to forcibly overthrow her sister, she was banished from the Crystal Palace of New Camelot. Now the outlaw, she then dedicated her life to seeking revenge upon her former teacher and take his place too.

Some time after she has vowed to master all the magic of Avalon, she had discovered and tuned the legendary Enchanted Jewel called the Dark Stone and used it to communicate with two dweasle servants, Rufis and Twigg, whom she uses to find jewels for her. The more enchanted jewels Kale takes control of, the stronger her powers become. Kale's mean of transport is a dragon wagon powered by the huge red winged dragon called Grimm, who transports Lady Kale to and from her forbidding castle in dark Thornwoods, former area of Ravenwoods changed by her magic.

Kale's original costume was a Jewel Rider-style red jumpsuit-type costume with a big gloves, under knee-boots, and a relatively short cape. After gaining the Dark Stone in the first episode, she magically transformed it into an also red jewel armor (a long cape, above-knee boots, a jewel on chest, and a dragon-shaped crown-like helmet); this became her primary costume for the rest of the series.

[edit] First season

In the first season, after banishing Merlin to Wild Magic, Lady Kale spends most of her time searching for the Crown Jewels in order to gain magical powers, battling Jewel Riders along the way, and seeks to destroy Merlin once and for all and capture a key to the his jewel box.

Notable episodes:

  • Travel Trees Don't Dance

Lady Kale dances her way to the jewel of Northwoods.

  • The Faery Princess

Kale finds a portal to another realm, kingdom of the fairy folk. There, she attempts to seize power and become the queen. The fairy magic, however, work differently than in Avalon.

  • Dreamfields

Kale and Princess Gwenevere meet in the Dreamfields, and they both dream of each other: that Kale had stolen the Sunstone and become good, defending Avalon against Gwen and the Dark Stone's evil. This experience changed Kale for a moment, but she soon returned to her villainous ways.

  • Revenge of the Dark Stone (1) and Full Circle (2)

Eventually, after all seven Crown Jewels were found, Lady Kale sneaked into the Crystal Palace disguised as Anya. There, after she hijacked the powers of the Jewel Keep and defeated all her enemies, seemingly all-powerful Kale sat at the Anya's throne. However, after the initially successful coup "the reign of Queen Kale" ended when she was tricked by Merlin and seemingly destroyed.

In the second season, instead of Crown Jewels, the Jewel Riders sought out the ancient Wizard Jewels, with an extra adversary to deal with besides Kale. While it was believed for a while that Kale was lost forever, in reality she was merely sucked into the Wild Magic and drifted there until she was rescued and freed by another captive of the realm, the evil wizard Morgana Le Fay of Arthurian folklore, of whom Kale becomes an uneasy ally and apprentice. Because Morgana can only make illusions of herself in Avalon, she sends Kale to find the lost jewels of all the ancient wizards; with all seven Wizard Jewels Morgana can free the other wizards and return to Avalon.

Kale meets her end in the series finale, transformed together with her dragon into a stone statue in the magical showdown with Princess Gwenevere.
