[edit] Welcome to the dog breeds project

Glad you're on board. We all tend to come on board, get excited and add a bunch of dog stuff, then realize that we've still got real jobs and real lives (well, some of us, sort of) and pull back a bit, so it's always nice to have a new contributor. One of my thoughts has been that it's better to add one fairly complete article than to add several nearly empty stubs. If articles remain nonexistent until someone is ready to work on them, then they still show up as undefined links, making it really easy to find the ones that still need a full article.

Of course, that's not the way it usually seems to work. :-)

User:Sannse and I are probably the most deeply immersed in dog-related topics and what strategies and guidelines have been used for dog stuff, so feel free to ask her or me any questions on our talk pages (User talk:Elf).

A couple of notes:

  • I've been hoping to create a dog training article but (as you noticed) haven't gotten around to it. So it would be wonderful if you could. Articles to check first would be Obedience training--and related training articles linked from there (operant conditioning and all) and the brief section on dog intelligence in the main Dog article. Then go for it!
  • National Kennel Club--Most dog people of my acquaintance who are familiar with the National Kennel Club don't hold it in the highest regard. I attempted to add to the article a (hopefully) NPOV discussion of why that is. In any event, I wouldn't classify it as a major registry (e.g., UKC is certainly a bigger, more respected, and much older kennel club and we've barely been including that in the lists of major clubs. Feel free to weigh in on that discussion on the talk page for the dog project if you care to.

Again, welcome, and have at it! Elf | Talk 19:33, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] National Kennel Club

Ah! Understood. As one person put it, "Which breed is involved is very important in evaluating which registry raises red flags." Apparently the NKC raises more red flags than some others. :-/ Let it be said, however, that I am not a big fan of AKC, either. There doesn't seem to be a perfect answer to handling purebreed registries-- Elf | Talk 19:54, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Breed table

Hey, BTW, I wanted to say congrats on doing a great job on the Cesky Terrier stub--you got the wiki markup and general strategy and even the breed table, all of which most newcomers take a while to figure out. You done good! I edited the table to make it even more consistent. I've found that the best way to start a new breed table is to go to the dog breeds project page, click edit this page, copy the whole existing table (including the comments at beginning and end saying that this is markup for the breed table), paste into the new article, and edit from there. That way nuthin' gets left out. You've started well. Thanks! (And I'm like you--I can edit other people's stuff just fine but my own writing is sometimes a bit, er, too casual.) [edit] hi there

Welcome to the dog project! Hope you have fun with it. Quill 00:35, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] CKC breeds

Good question! I know that we haven't found a list of the breed standards online. You'd think that they must be there somewhere, but if they exist, they're in some obscure location. That's why there's no link in the breed table template. If you find something, we can add it to the template. I'm not sure where Sannse got the original info about what CKC groups the various breeds are in, which is in a spreadsheet that I've been working from. Elf | Talk 04:28, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] NKC vs UKC

No problem. There are so many of these organizations out there and it takes a while to get used to the alphabet soup. Elf | Talk 18:37, 31 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Username fun

I find it endlessly entertaining that there's a cat (la chat...) editing various dog pages.  :-) Elf | Talk 16:31, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Mountains

Hey, just got back from the mountains. Great to see you around... Tuf-Kat 05:12, Aug 17, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Cat breeds

Deleted British Shorthair and Scottish Fold so you can now move the articles. Elf | Talk 18:17, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Pit bull

Thanks for the quick dog ID! Please use it in whichever articles it'll help. Nothing wrong with having it in both the pit bull & breed articles. Elf | Talk

Alley Cat?

Oui. [[User:Lachatdelarue|Lachatdelarue (talk)]] 20:14, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Quick Response

Wow thanks for the quick response to my request for help on the Shih Tzu picture. I got back from dinner and it was already resized, cropped, and up on the article—all in under and hour! Great job, and much appreciated! - biggins | talk 03:53, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks!

Thanks for the info on the cat breeds project, I've signed myself up and hopefully got the format for the Turkish Van page right. I don't know quite as much about some other breeds but I know people who do. The factual errors were horrifying to me so forgive me if I'ma bit passionate about getting the correct information about cats out! Pschemp 04:23, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Crop away!

not at all, i don't mind if you crop cat pics, i should have probably done that first. oh well...i'll learn. Pschemp 14:35, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] book-stub

Hi, I noticed you created the book-stub sub-category for stubs. What's the difference between book-stubs and literature-stubs? --YUL89YYZ 20:41, Oct 13, 2004 (UTC)

So, can I merge the book stub back into literature? --YUL89YYZ 12:14, Oct 14, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks, will do. No need to apologize. --YUL89YYZ 13:18, Oct 14, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Play on words?

Right now, with the gender error (la instead of le), La chat de la rue sounds like L'achat de la rue which means The buying of the street! If it is done on purpose, then most likely the majority of English speakers on en.wikipedia.org will never know! :-)

Le chat de la rue would be a grammatically correct sentence, but it would still be incorrect French. A more correct translation of street cat would be Le chat de ruelle (rue is street, whereas ruelle is small street or a backstreet). But to be truly meaningful to French speakers, it would be even better as Le chat de goutière (gutter cat).

As you can see, I have a lot of time to spare! Have a nice one!

Regards,
